Great Speck-ulation on Lake Okeechobee

By Sue Cocking, Guy Harvey Outpost staff writer

[email protected]

[Lakeport, FL.–] It won’t be too long before scores of pontoon boats lit up like the Fourth of July and festooned with a porcupine-like array of telescoping fishing rods will crowd northern Lake Okeechobee most nights.

Late fall through early spring is considered the height of the black crappie, or speckled perch season on the Big O. But here’s a news flash to all the snowbirds arriving on the first cold fronts aiming to catch a limit of specks: the fish have been here for months now. A couple savvy locals have been catching their limit of 25 less than a mile from the boat ramp at Harney Pond Canal in Lakeport.

“The biggest myth is that you can only catch them in winter,” said captain Steve Daniel, a veteran guide and tournament champion. “This summer, I caught a lot of them on Rat-L-Traps and jerkbaits the same places I caught bass.”

Daniel acknowledges it’s a bit harder to catch specks during warm days than at night, especially if water levels are high. That’s because the fish tend to stick to heavy cover under bright conditions and there are thousands of acres of vegetation — bulrush, Kissimmee grass, hydrilla and lily pads– where they hide.

At night, however, crappie can be lured away from their hideouts into open water by anglers lighting up their vessels and drawing hordes of minnows that the fish love to eat. With enough rods hanging off the boat, a pair of fishermen can bag a limit of 50 in just a couple of hours in hot spots such as the mouth of the Kissimmee River, Harney Pond Canal, the Rim Canal, and Fisheating Bay–especially near an area dubbed the “Monkey Box”.

A nighttime fiesta requires a bucket full of Missouri minnows, available at just about any bait and tackle shop around the lake. Anglers thread them onto a small jig head of 1/8- to 1/16- ounces or on a light wire #4 hook weighted with a split shot. They arrange their 15-foot rods or cane poles in holders in the gunwales so that the tips are low to the surface. When the rod tip dips into the water, they know they have a bite. The rods don’t have reels; fish are simply lifted into the boat.

“It’s not rocket science,” Daniel chuckled.

Day-specking with artificial lures requires a bit more finesse. Like black bass, crappie tend to follow a pattern, Daniel said, which means they’ll stick to a particular kind of cover and a certain depth, rarely hugging the bottom. Anglers need to cover a lot of ground with their electric trolling motors, prospecting in holes in various stands of vegetation with long limber rods. It’s a lot like flipping for bass, except there’s no reel. A length of 20-to-30-pound monofilament matched to the water depth is simply tied to the eye catch of the rod and threaded through the guides.

For lures, Daniel recommends jigs– small bucktails, tube jigs or twister tails. For clear water, he favors white; in dingy water, he chooses yellow, chartreuse, or even black (because it creates a shadow).

The reward will be a cooler full of tasty, but not very big fish. Daniel said two-pounders are not very common on the Big O; the state record for the species is three pounds, 13 1/4 ounces caught in Lake Talquin near Tallahassee in 1992.

But the good news from biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is that Lake O specks are getting bigger. The species took a big hit from Hurricane Wilma in 2005, but catch rates have been on the rise for the past eight years or so. Sampling conducted by biologists has shown larger, older fish each year. With last year’s bountiful shad spawn, numbers and size could continue to increase.

Back to the most important part: eating. Most anglers fillet and fry their specks; the health-conscious use olive oil. Or you could just take them to Tin Fish in Okeechobee to have them cooked for you with a couple of sides. Fresh and delicious no matter what.

www.okeechobeeprostevedaniel.com Another chatter bait bass around bluegill beds, If you want to catch big bass on the Big O right now, look for the bluegill beds and use a bluegill color chatter

bait and yes the original chatter bait. If the water is clear and calm you will want to have your

favorite top water bait tied on. The lake has been on fire all summer and I can't wait to see what

the winter will bring, it could be the best we have ever seen. Thanks to all the efforts from our FWC. Their officers are the best in the country.

Fishing No TrophyCatch fish yet in Okeechobee

By SUSAN COCKING The Miami Herald

Okeechobee has yet to produce a fish for Florida’s new program that rewards the catch and release of bass, but there are plenty there.

Lake Okeechobee bass guide holds up a four-pounder caught recently by a customer fishing near Moore Haven. Not quite the 8-pounder needed for the state's new TrophyCatch incentive program, but there are plenty of bigger fish out there to be caught. CLEWISTON -- Florida’s new TrophyCatch bass incentive program has been under way for about 2 1/2 weeks, with prizes being upped and added by the day.The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and its industry partners are rewarding anglers for catching, documenting and releasing big largemouth bass so that others may repeat that enjoyable process.

The aim is to gather information on the sizes and distribution of “hawgs” in the Sunshine State’s lakes, ponds, canals and rivers so they can be managed effectively. Anglers can register for free at TrophyCatchFlorida.com, but they must have a valid Florida freshwater fishing license.TrophyCatch targets bass heavier than 8 pounds. Fish weighing from 8 to 9.9 pounds are eligible for the Lunker Club. Fish from 10 to 12.9 pounds are entered in the Trophy Club. The angler simply catches the fish, shoots a photo with the fish on a scale and another with a tape measure, lets it go and reports it online. Bass heavier than 13 pounds caught between now and April 30 must be kept alive and certified in-person by an FWC staffer. The angler would be eligible for the Hall of Fame Club. Prizes include gift cards, fishing gear and replica mounts. Phoenix Boats will award a boat and trailer to an angler randomly selected from the registration list, whether or not he or she catches a fish. The year’s biggest bass will earn a Super Bowl-style ring. If it is caught in Osceola County, the Kissimmee Convention and Visitors Bureau will pay the angler $10,000 and reward the fishing guide (if there is one) with $2,500. Other prizes might be added as private sponsors come on board.Surprisingly, as of last week, no one had entered a fish from Lake Okeechobee, which, despite a high-water level of more than 15 feet and rising, is yielding plenty of bass 8 pounds and up.“We don’t catch 13-pounders down here, but we catch a lot of 8-to-10-pounders — probably more than any place in the country,” said veteran Lake O bass guide and tournament pro Steve Daniel of Clewiston.Daniel recently completed shooting separate TV fishing shows with B.A.S.S. Elite Series pros Shaw Grigsby of Gainesville (Sportsman’s Channel) and Byron Velvick of South Texas (Outdoor Channel). Grigsby caught two 7-pounders flipping lures near Clewiston and South Bay. Velvick caught nearly 70 bass, including an 8-pounder, using spinnerbaits amid rainy weather near Lakeport.“The fishing was incredible,” Daniel said.Water levels in the big lake have risen dramatically from August’s drenching Tropical Storm Isaac, followed by more recent heavy rains. Daniel said the bass responded accordingly.“As soon as the water started coming up, the fish started migrating toward the grass,” he said. “People think the water’s getting higher and higher and the fish will keep migrating further in where it’s shallow. But the fish are all within 150 yards of the outside edge because there’s a good food source for them.”Daniel said bass are eating shiners, gizzard shad and small bluegill.Because the lake is so large at more than 700 square miles, the bass do not all spawn at the same time, he said. However, some are expected to spawn with the first full moon of November, he said, and they likely will move inshore. But there will always be some fish in a pre-spawn or post-spawn mode to catch.Although Daniel said he empathizes with anglers in the St. Lucie Estuary and Caloosahatchee River, which are on the receiving ends of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ efforts to lower lake levels, the high water does have an up side.“The lake being a little higher gives better access to places,” he said. “Our visitors can run anywhere they want to run without tearing their boats up.”Daniel, who has been guiding anglers on the lake since the 1980s, said water levels are bound to come down as South Florida gets further into the dry season. He believes the bass fishing will be even better than last winter, which was epic.“It’s hard to call it work when you take people fishing on the best bass lake in the world,” he said. “And it’ll be better this year.”

Seven pound bass on Lake Okechobee

This is part two of our guided trip on lake Okeechobee.

5/16/2012

The lake level is around 11'5 feet and there is still a lot of bass in the grass all around the lake. Pelican bay on the south end is good and there is a lot of good bass on both sides of Rita island. The shoal from the blue hole all the way to the monkey box is also a good place to look for those big bass still in the edges of the grass. If you are looking around in the blue hole, check the bottom for those rocky places and make sure you go out to deep water before you try to get on plane. A 4 foot piece of cane is what I use to feel the bottom if im not sure of the lake bottom. There is a lot of schooling bass all along the shoal and the Tuscarron tomahawk rigged with a 1/8 jig head has been the best for me lately. I dont know if I have ever seen as many love bugs hatch out in the middle of the lake as ive seen lately. My favorite area right now is the tin house on the North end, there is a lot of bass in the grass and on some days they school off shore in this area, just look for the birds feeding off shore and you will catch a lot of fish on small crank baits like rattle traps and you have to try the tomahawk and tuscarron Cherokee rippler fished on a small jig head. Those baits have out fished the crank baits and all you have to do is cast them and crank them just under the surface. It is also time to start looking for schooling bass in the mouth of the river, this is going to be hot this summer. The hot lures for fishing the grass has been the jigs and large worms. One observation I've had lately is I havent seen many common water snakes, usually we see a lot of them this time of year and I havent seen many at all this spring. Lots of love bugs in the middle of the lake and not seeing many snakes, I guess it is time to have Cory Lee our head biologist on HOOKED UP WITH STEVE AND DEB to see if they have notest the same observations. Our FWC has done a great job and they are always out on the lake testing everything to make sure everything is going well. I love the summer fishing and make sure to check out the late afternoon fishing along the edges of the grass, I thing the evenings are better than the mornings. Bluegill and shellcraker fishing has been great all around the lake it has never been better. We will be posting updated each week starting with this report.

3/18/12

Lots of bass working open water from the point of cramer Island to pelican bay, just look for the birds. The better fish are in the edeges of the grass. Rick Marsh caught 3 bass over 6lb. in the edeges on a gold johnson spoon. I havent used a spoon in a long time. A few big bass are still beinging caught flipping the grass in pelican bay. The water near Clewiston has been slow on lures with the shinners fishing being great. The area outside of dyses ditch was good for me Sat. on spinner baits. The best way to find this line is to come in from the sportsmans channel poles until you run into the grass, this is a great hard line. The area from bird island to horse in the very outside hydrilla wad good before the east wind but will be great as soon as the water clears a little. There is a lot of schooling bass at horse island just outside the pads, just look for the birds early in the morning. The area from Horse island to Indian prarie on the outside edeges in the reed points and kissimmi grass pockets, also look for the birds in this area. Almost forgot, that mouse color spinner bait has been the color on the lake for the last few weeks, Jarards tackle has the spinner bait. Good luck.

3/11/2012

The bass are thinking it is summer time with all the very warm weather we are getting. A lot of schooling bass off shore and many big bass being caught on the outside of the grass early and late in the afternoon on your favorite spinner baits and swimmbaits. As long as the water stays above 11 feet the bass will stay in the grass and start feeding on bream that will be spawning along the edges of the grass. One of the main reasons for certain areas along the outside grass being more consistent than others is the amount of rock on the bottom. If you find a school of bass, check the bottom with a 4 foot piece of cane pole to see if the bottom is rock or sand. If it is rock there is a good chance that area will be good for a long period of time. Make sure you know the depth you need to get your boat on plane without hitting the bottom, if you take off in a rocky area and touch the bottom it will ruin your day. If you don't know the area, feel the bottom with a stick. Live bait fishing is as good as I have ever seen on the lake. I've been fishing the outside grass in these rocky areas with live bait early and late and when the bite slows I move in closer to the grass and use my steel leader rig and catch fish all day long. This rig involves a 8/0 weedless bait hook attached to a 3 foot steel leader made of 024 steel. The steel leader keeps the shiner from being able to swim around the reeds and bulrushes. Attach a float to the leader and not the line. Your shiner can swim freely without tieing you to the grass, hook the shiner in the back and it will swim in the grass without hanging you up. Pitch the shiner in places where you usually pitch your jigs. You can only fish one rod because you need to have the rod in your hand, the strikes come very fast. It will amaze you what you will catch in the heavy cover with this live bait rig. Catch HOOKED UP WITH STEVE & DEB for the latest reports on fishing lake Okeechobee 5 to 7am Sat. on www.wokc.com.

1/11/2012

The bass fishing has been slow this week after the cold front on fast moving baits but the flippin bite has been good in the heavier cover. Some realy big bass have been caught this week but the numbers are down from the last few weeks. Ive played around with some flippin lures this week and one of the neetest things I found was when I put a black rude frog from tuscaroron lures on a half once jig head and pitched it and swam it through the grass. This bait is not just a great buzz frog but a great swim jig when rigged on a heavy jig head. Don't be afraid to try weird things, that is how we come up with some realy good stuff. The crappie fishing has been good along the Clewiston channel in the heavy bullrushes on jigs and minnows. Untill next week go fishing and stay hooked up. Catch HOOKED UP WITH STEVE AND DEB Sat. 5 to 7am eastern for the latest reports on lake Okeechobee.

11/25/11

It was great to get up early on thanksgiving morning and seeing KVD on fox news supporting bass pro shops and everything they do for outdoors men and women all over the country. It is hard to realize that November is nearly gone. We are experiencing even better bass fishing than last year and even the specks are being caught in the grass. A very good thing for the thousands of anglers who visit out great lake for the winter. I'm always buying new stuff and rigging them up and going to the pool and usually throwing them in the trash as I leave. There is so much new stuff out there and not a whole lot of new designs, most new lures are knock off's of already proven lures are knock off's of knock off's. Pretty sad when lure companys have to steal designs from some great designers but this is the way of the fishing world with so many customers who are not really up on what is out there and what was out there first. One thing I have to say about that is usually the original lures are the best and not the knock off's even if they are a little more expensive they are in most cases the better lures. I found a new lure a few weeks ago and was really impressed. The lure is a swim bait that runs strait even with a hook that has no weight and has a better quality of plastic that doesn't tear of the hook when you catch a bass. Last week I caught 30 bass on one lure and then gave it to my client who had a tournament on Okeechobee the next two days. I haven't spoken to him to see how he did in his tournament but he really wanted that lure I was throwing. Another thing I liked about the new lure was the colors. The Tenn shad color had a lot of solid metal foil inside a clear bait and that produced a lot of flash, most swim baits just have flakes that look good to the anglers but don't produce much flash and I know that the flash from a jerk bait is what makes some lures better than others and I really think that is why this bait produces the way it does. No other soft swim bait or soft jerk bait produces as much flash as the TOMAHAWK and CHEROKEE RIPPER from TUSCARORAN LURES. You won't find them in every tackle shop but I think they have a on line store that has a lot of other baits including a tube lure that I like as well. A pack of swim baits of this Quality would usually cost 10 to 15 dollars but they cost under $7 for a pack of four. I really think this is the best lure ever designed for the kind of fishing we do here on Okeechobee. Pick up a pack and let me know what you think. I'm spending a lot of time learning the lake all over again since the lake levels came up and there are many places that I thought would be too thick with grass and brush that look better than I've ever seen. Mother nature knows what she is doing, Lake Okeechobee looks better than I've ever seen It. Pick up your favorite swimmbait and cover as much water as you can and when you get some strikes slow down and punch the mats and pitch the craws in the reeds and fish every inch. There are large numbers of bass in some small areas. Catch us on HOOKED UP WITH STEVE & DEB Sat. 5 to 7am on wokc 1570am and 100.9 fm and on line at www.wokc.com.

11/3/12

Another great week on the lake. Shinner fishing was great on the north end out of Okeechobee with the guides reporting catches of over 100 bass on some days and the slow days were very good. With the north winds I understand why the north end was so good. I think the best lure fishing was in the Clewiston area where the bass are moving way back in the grass and even with the high winds the water stayed very clear. We just had the Home Depot group here yesterday and Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman were shinner fishing and everyone caught a lot of bass. Thanks to Raymond and all the Roland Martin staff for making this event a great success. This was their third year for this event and they will be back next year. Getting back to fishing, you can go almost anywhere on the big O right now and catch a lot of bass. The crappie fishing is getting better on the north end of the lake and we are getting a lot of good reports from the Nubbins pump where the bank fishing has been hot. Catch us on HOOKED UP WITH STEVE & DEB for the latest fishing reports from around the lake and reports from the tour professionals from all over the country every Saturday morning 5 to 7am on www.wokc.com or locally on 1570am and 100.9fm in Okeechobee.

10/23/12

Well we can finally start fishing in the grass, the lake level will continue to rise and we will have a great time this winter. Swimbaits and buzzbaits are my favorite lures for fishing the grass. You will have to fish fast and cover a lot of water to find those great spots. There is a lot of good looking water and the schools of bass are in small areas right now but will get better as more bass are moving in from the lake to look for those prime spawning areas. When you get a good bite from a big bass, slow down and pick the area apart. There will be more big bass in the area if you can trick them into biting. The main lake is staying clear even with the new water and wind from the storms so dont over look those off shore areas, there are a lot of bass that will stay off shore where there are large schools of bait. Our bass on Okeechobee will spawn all winter and there will always be schools of big bass off shore. When one of those large schools of big bass move into the grass the big swimbait and buzzbait will find them. Catch us on HOOKED UP WITH STEVE & DEB on www.wokc.com every Sat. morning for the latest fishing reports and advice from the pros and local guides on what is working on the big O. The salt water zipper dipper from charlie's worms is a good choice for looking for trophy bass in the grass. Untill next week go fishing and stay hooked up.

9/20/11

Fishing was great all week with a lot of top water bass being caught on the off shore structure. But now you can get those charlies swim baits out and head into the grass. The lake is pushing the 11 foot mark and that means there is enough water in the grass for those pre spawn bass to hang out and give us some exciting shallow water grass fishing. The eel grass had grown out from the kissimmie grass and that will make the shallow grass fishing even more fun. The salt water zipper dipper from charlies worms is my favorite lure for this type of fishing. You can use this bait on a buzz bait or a spinner bait instead of the standered skirts, just thread it on the hook with a drop of supper glue on the hook to hold in place. Make sure when you drive your boat up to the grass, stay out at least 50 yards and trim the motor up and slide in with the motor up. When you leave the grass idle out far enough for your boat and use the stick and feel the bottom for rocks before taking off. Every boat is different, when my sonar reads 1.8 and the bottom is sand and not hard I can take off. It is important to know your boat and use common sence. Just dont get in a hurry and going for a little deeper water will save the day and your equipment. This fall will be some of the best fishing we have seen in years if the water keeps coming up. Pray for some rain. Until next time go fishing and stay hooked up.

8/23/11

Fishing was great this week, The top water bite was great on the reef from marker 5 in the Clewiston channel all the way to the reef in front of Rita island. On these calm days you can ride along the reef and look for the feeding activity. There are miles of area to look. Some of these schools are very big and when you find the right ones you can catch hundreds of bass. The bream are spawning all over the lake and I can't remember ever seeing bream spawn this much in August. In August with a half moon and a spawn as big as I've ever seen I can't wait to see what happens when the moon gets full. Bottom line is the lake is healthier than I've ever seen it and the shrimp grass is growing way out in the lake, things are good. When the lake level reaches 11 feet above sea level the haul seines can start dragging their nets in the areas where the shrimp grass is growing and will do a lot of damage to the health of Okeechobee. We are waiting for the FWC to move the markers back to where the are supposed to be. Getting these markers put one mile out from emergent vegetation where they are supposed to be will do a lot to help keep the lake healthy. We will keep everyone updated on the commercial netting on Okeechobee on HOOKED UP WITH STEVE AND DEB every Sat. 5 to 7 am on www.wokc.com and 1570am and 100.9 fm. The FWC says they are working on the problems of commercial fishing and we will have their people on the show to keep everyone updated. The lake is doing great and we want to make sure the nets don't destroy its very delicate eco system. Commercial fishing has been baned all over and the country and we would like to see nets baned from Lake Okeechobee's delicate eco system as well. Until next week go fishing and stay HOOKED UP.

8/11/11

Fishing has been great, I cant remember having a slow day in quite a while. While fishing with Shaw Grigsby I noticed that some of the newest maps on his new electronics had some of our secrete little depressions on the maps. We have had for a long time the reefs and obstructions marked on the standard mapping but the newest maps, which there are many different kinds have almost all if not all the lake contures marked on them. There are no secrete spots any more but you still have to get out there and find the ones that are active with catchable bass. Having the newest equipment on your bass boat is a lot more important than most anglers realize. We are going to show on HOOKED UP WITH STEVE & DEB how to restore your old bass boat and bring it back into the present. Everything from working on the hull and deck to updating that old boat with the latest equipment available. My project boat is a 1988 Big O Boat. Bringing this old boat back to new condition is going to be a fun project. We will have a big part of our radio show dedicated to this project and we will be talking to all the experts and getting all the details and what it actually costs to bring your old boat back to the present. I cant wait to talk to the people making the mapping for our electronics and letting our listeners know what maps are the best for lake Okeechobee even if they are giving up most of my little secrete spots. Check us out every Saturday morning on WOKC 1570AM AND 100.9FM on line at www.wokc.com click on air to listen in and keep up with the fishing on Okeechobee and keep up with the Big O Project. We will be posting pictures and some videos of the project from start to finish on face book at hooked up with Steve and Deb and on www.okeechobeeprostevedaniel.com If you want to catch fish on Okeechobee right now just tie on a Charlie's zipper dipper and nose hook it and throw it every where. There are a lot of swim baits out there and what sets the Charlie's apart is that the nose doesn't have salt. That makes the bait stay on the hook longer and you don't need as many lures in a day when you catch a hundred bass a day, to me that is a big deal. They really do last a lot longer than any other swim bait. Charlie's is coming out with a larger version and I cant wait to get it.

8/2/11

Shaw Grigsby came over to Okeechobbee last week and filmed a show with strike kings soft swimbait. Every swim bait is different and you have to experiment with them with different hooks to get all you can out of the lures. The best place to do that is at the swimming pool. One thing I learned this week is how to rig the soft swimbaits for open water fishing.

Never rig a swimbait weedless while fishing open water. It is very important to rig the bait in a way where the head moves opposite the tail.

My favorite swimbait rig for Okeechobee in open is the Charlies zipper-Dipper rigged with a 3/0 1/8 oz.

EWG hook. Run a tooth pick through the eyes of the bait and nose hook the lure just behind the tooth pick and keep the hook exactly in the center of the zipper/Dipper. On Okeechobee right now you can catch 100 bass a day and the tooth pick helps keep the lure from being slung off the hook, The advantage of nose hooking the zipper Dipper is you don't need to reset the hook every time you catch a bass and to me that is important. If you have to fiddle with the bait each time you catch a bass you loose a lot of time in a day of fishing. As long as the bait is on the nose hook I know it is swimming properly. Here a some pictures of how My zipper-Dipper looks looks before I tie it on my 50lb. Diamond braid and my 7ft. Roland Martin med action casting rod and my 1000 pro supercaster from US reels. I think Diamond braid is a must for fishing a swimbait because the bass tend to hit at the end of some very long casts. The 1000 pro super caster reed is the longest casting reel I've ever used ans the 7 to 1 gears allows me to reel very fast when a bass tracks down my zipper Dipper and is coming at the boat when he eats my lure. That happens a lot with the soft swimbaits. Sometimes the bass doesn't know he is hooked and will pass right by my boat so retrieving the line fast is a must when fishing the swimbait. Check out the pictures and I hope this will help everyone catch more bass on my favorite lure right now, the soft swimbait.

7/21/11

The lake level is rising a bit but we still need a lot of rain to get the lake back to a normal level. Fishing is still good, it is still taking over 30lb. with a five bass limit to win tournaments on both ends of the lake. Shaw Grigsby is coming to Okeechobee next week to film one more cast on the sportsman channel. These shows get us a lot of good exposure and the pressure is on for me to show case our great lake. We will be looking for bass that will bite strike kings swimmbaits and that is right up my alley. I need to make sure we can catch big bass on these lures, shouldn't be a problem but when the cameras are on sometimes things get a lot harder. I like seeing the new lures available from strike king when Shaw is in town, they really have some great stuff. The rim canal is still the place to look for big bass, Steve Lake proved that last week with his 33lb. catch on the south end of Okeechobee. The river is still good on the north end with big catches every week to win events up there. Bream fishing remains good all around the lake and im going to see if shaw is interested in doing a little bream fishing next week. There is no better way to let the world know that Okeechobee is the best bass fishing in the country but we have to produce some really big bass to do that. The thing I like about Shaw and one more cast is they try to fish on public water and they never stage a shot for the show. Every fish caught is the real thing, that puts the pressure back on me to get us around some big bass that will bite. I've always said if you fish for big bass on Okeechobee with big bass lures you will , in a day of hard fishing get hooked up on some really big bass. Stay focused and never let up.

,rain around the lake. Bass fishing has slowed down some but there were some big bass brought to my boat this week. Fishing the large swim baits in the shallow water off shore will produce the largest bass but you will have to stay committed to making a lot of cast and covering a lot of water. Bream fishing was great this past week and the bettle spin was the bait of choice for me. One thing I noticed was when bream chase your lure and not bite you can speed up the retrieve and get some of them to bite. There are always periods during the day when they eat the lure and not just follow it. Getting them to bite when they are not interested in biting is the real challenge. During these slow periods we change the standard body of the bettle spin with a little twister grub and this helped some. Between 12 and 1 o clock on Tuesday, the day before the full moon there was a love bug hatch out on the reef and when those love bugs were hatching the bream were very active in biting our little black bettle spins. This was the first time I ever witnessed a love bug hatch in the middle of Okeechobee and it was interesting to be covered up with bugs hatching in the water and bream getting as active as you will ever see them. It is really an adventure every time you go out on the lake. In my 26 years of fishing Okeechobee there are always new things to learn about our eco system. You just have to look around. Check out HOOKED UP WITH STEVE AND DEB next Sat. 5 to 7 am on 1570am 100.9fm or www.wokc.com for the latest interviews with the best pros in the world and the latest news about fishing here in. South Fl. Until next week go fishing and stay hooked up.

6/9/2011

This will be a great week for bream fishing. Full moon next week in june always spells great bream and shell cracker fishing. Had a great day yesterday fishing with the woodys from morehaven that won a fishing trip on the big o during the flw event here in feb. We caught several bass in the 4 to 6lb class on large swim baits. I discovered a new way to hook the large soft swim baits that excites me a lot and i will talk about this on hooked up with Steve and deb Sat morning on wokc 1570am 100.9fm and to our thousands of on line listeners on wokc.com. 5 to 7 am. Big schools of bass roaming the open water are where im spending most of my time on the water water. Remember to always scan the open water looking for anything that could give up their location. Just a few feet one way or the other can spell the difference in having a great day on the lake.

6/2/2011e water

Bass fishing has been the same for many weeks now with many bass in the clewiston channel and rim canal. My best approach is with a fluke or since on a open jig head. With the open hook my customers are catching many more bass than with the weedless hooks we usually use. If you are targeting the biggest bass in the lake you need to fish off shore on the reefs and depressions out in the open water with big swim baits or large worms such as the 10 inch charlies worm or the 7 inch sinco often referred to as the stoggie. With the lake at 10 ft, you will need a good guide that is not afraid to go out in the lake if you are not familiar with the off shore structure. Many guids are simply fishing the channel and not tackling the lake and still catching numbers of bass. If you really want to see what Okeechobee is all about, go out with a guide that really knows the lake. It is a real adventure, you can find bass that have never seen a lure or a shinner on a hook. These water levels make for some of the best fishing you have ever seen, and if you are fishing for big bass with big lures there is a good chance you will catch the bass of a life time. Until next week, go fish and stay hooked up.

4/28/2011

Fishing for bass has been great all week and with the water getting lower, the bass are loaded up by the thousands out on the off shore structure. I've had many days with 100 bass in a half day of fishing with the hover trap and the strike king king shad. The off shore fishing is my favorite way to fish Okeechobee and you with a little understanding of the mid lake strucksure can get into some of the best bass fishing in the world. If you can cast a lure you can catch bass on okeechobee in these big schools where the bass are eating anything that hits the water. In a few days when we have a dark moon the bream will be spawning again and you can bass fish early and fish for bream in the middle of the day. If you havent fished Okeechobee in a while you need to get out there and experence this great fishing

4/13/2011

Bass fishing this week has been incredable. Tournaments weights to win are in the 30lb range to win and 20lb bags wont get a respectable look from the spectators. Low clear water means long casts from top water and swimbaits are my sugestion for a shot at the biggest bass I cant say one area is better than another as long as the water is clear and there is 2 feet of water on the edeges. Take time to idle out far enough to get your boat on plane and make sure the bottom is soft and not rocky. A 4 foot piece of a cane pole is usefull to feel the bottom. Dont take a chance if you dont know for sure your depth is safe. We should have a good bream spawn in the main lake durring the full moon. My favorite thing is bass fishing daylight untill about 10 oclock and then get out the bettle spin and bream fish untill the livewell is full. Those little clickers you punch each time you put one in the well will help you keep count, I always misscount. They cost around $10 at your sporting goods store. We will be doing a video to show how I do all the checks to prepare for taking off in the lake to make sure you can get up quick and with piece of mind. Common sence goes a long way and you can get around the lake safely without the fear of destroying your pride and joy. This video will be on my website very soon. Untill next week go fishing and stay hooked up.

tHE INTERNATIONAL WOMENS FISHING ASSOCIATION MADE THEIR ANUAL TRIP TO CLEWISTON THIS WEEK AND THEY HAD RECORD CATCHES IN THEIR EVENT. BETSY BULLARD WON TOP HONORS BY CATCHING THE MOST FISH OVER THE TWO DAYS. tHE FIRST DAY OF THE EVENT BETSY AND ANGIE LUCAS HAD A TOTAL OF 151 BASS WHILE FISHING WITH ME AND GUIDE KEVIN LONG WAS IN SECOND WITH HIS TWO LADIES BY CATCHING OVER 100 BASS. ALL THE LADIES USE 8LB. TEST LINE AND ULTRA LIGHT GEAR FOR THE EVENT, NOT WHAT WE ARE USUALLY DOING ON THE BEST BASS FISHING LAKE IN THE WORLD. THE GUIDES DO NOT FISH SO THESE KIND OF NUMBERS SPEAK HIGHLY FOR THE LADIES AND THEIR FISHING SKILLS. THE NEXT EVENT FOR THE IWFA WILL BE IN VENNIS LA. NEXT MONTH WHERE THE WILL BE FISHING FOR RED FISH AND TROUT. ROLAND MARTIN MADE A VISIT HERE THIS WEEK FISHING WITH THE MANAGRS FROM BASS PRO SHOPS AND THEIR CATCHES WERE IMPRESSIVE WITH MANY 5 BASS LIMITS OVER 25 LB. THE LAKE IS GREAT AND WITH THE RAINS LAST WEEK IS HOLDING STEADY AND THE NEXT FULL MOON THE BREAM WILL BE BEDDING EVERY WHERE, I CANT WAIT TO GER OUT MY BETTLE SPINS. FISH FOR BASS UNTIL ABOUT 10 AM AND THEN GO LOOK FOR THE BIGGEST BEDS YOU CAN FIND OFF SHORE AND FILL THE LIVE WELLS WITH TH BEST EATING FISH IN THE LAKE. A GOOD IDEA IS TO PURCHAS ONE OF THOSE CLICKERS TO COUNT YOUR CATCH, I ALMOST ALWAYS END UP WITH A FEW MORE THAN THE LAW ALLOWS SO I HAVE NOW GOT ONE MYSELF. YHEY COST AROUND 10 DOLLARS. THIS WEEK THERE WERE GOOD BASS CATCHES ALL OVER THE LAKE, JUST REMEMBER TO TRIM UP WHEN RUNNING INTO THE GRASS AND ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU IDLE OUT AND GET PLENTY OF DEPTH BEFORE YOU TRY TO GET ON PLANE. UNTIL NEXT WEEK GO FISHING AND STAY HOOKED UP.

3/30/2011

Bass fishing cant get any better than it is right now. The summer time outside grass and deep water fishing is starting a little earlier than normal. I fished with two high school seniors from Ohio yesterday and gaught over 75 bass by noon with 5 over 7lb on a variety of summer time lures. The big easy and strike king king shad produced most of the larger bass and the popper and bang=o=lure produced most of the bass from small to the 4 to 5 lb. bass. Fishing just doesn't get any better than yesterday even with the high winds. Knowing where to fish with the wind conditions is the key to great catches when the wind blows. Consult your local experts when planning a trip to the big O when the wind is a factor. The water is low and knowing what your boat needs to plane out is the most important thing a fisherman needs to know for piece of mind when fishing Okeechobee. There are a lot of boats sitting around town with beat up lower units. Even some of the experts here on the lake have hit bottom is some areas here on the lake so be carefull and idle out a little futher than you think, hitting rocks getting on plane will ruin your day. Until next week go fishing and stay hooked up.

3/23/2011

One of the best weeks I have ever had on Okeechobee, yesterday after fishing the first hour and only catching a few bass but one being over 9lb on a top dog surface bait I went looking for some new water and what I found was the biggest concentration of big bass that I have ever seen in open water on Okeechobee. Bang-o-lures and hedden poppers produced many bass over 5 to 6lb. I almost always find great spots when I finally wear out a area and i'm forced to look for new places and I find water that has't been fished before. The area is one that has a depression with a little deeper water near a huge spawning flat and there are big schools of big bass in the area. You don't find these every day, but when you do you really see how good lake Okeechobee really is. It has been taking over 30lb to win the one day tournaments here on the lake but every now and then you find a place where there is a 40 plus bag. For anyone who wants to save money on fishing tackle check out www.legacyoutdoors.com and make sure when you check out you use my discount code SDFL0066 and you will save another 10% with no shipping charges no mater what the weight. Fishing is getting better every week if thats possible. I always said our best fishing is in Aprill and MAY BUT WITH THE WARM WEATHER IT IS STARTING RIGHT NOW. tHE BASS ARE SHOWING UP ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE GRASS ALL OVER OKEECHOBEE AND YOU CAN CATCH THEM ON ALMOST ANY LURE YOU LIKE TO FISH WITH. i THINK THE BEST AREA FOR BIG BASS IS THE PELICAN BAY AREA SOUTH AND HORSE ISLAND NORTH. THE LAKE IS FALLING AND THE BASS ARE MOVING TO THE EDEGES WHERE THE ARE EASLY CAUGHT. AT 11.9 WE ARE ABOUT WHERE WE WERE 2 YEARS AGO WHEN THE LAKE WAS FISHING EASY. FOR A NEW WAY TO BUY FISHING TACKLE GO TO www.legacyoutdoors.com and use my discount code on the purchas order and get a 10% off and free shipping on all your fishing and hunting needs. 3/10/2011

Another great week of fishing on Okeechobee. You can catch bass almost any way you like. The live bait fishing gave up some big bass this and in two local tournaments last weekend it took over 30lb. to win Sat and Sunday, it doesn't get any better than that. Soft swim baits in the shallow grass along with your favorite top water baits are working all over Okeechobee and in the deeper holes the top water, and the strike king king shad have produced good for me this week. We are looking forward to the bream spawnning next month with topwater bass fishing early and about 10 oclock geting the beetle spin and catch large bream for the fish fry. So far we havent seen many bream or shell crakers yet but every thing is lining up for a great pan fish spawn, my favorite thing to do. It is hard to tell every one how good the bass fishing is and will only get better in April and May. What a great place to live and fish. Untill next week go fishing and stay hooked up. Catch HOOKED UP WITH STEVE AND DEB Sat morning 5 to 7 am. on wokc 1570 am and 100.9 fm or www.wokc.com and click on air and get the greatest fishing show on the air.

3/3/2011

The wind is the key to big catches this week. Knowing where you can fish in reasonably clear water is the key. The area in the kings bar pass is always good when the wind blows. The clear water and hydrilla is always a combination for very large bass. The soft swim bait is my bait of choice here on windy days. You may not get a lot of bites but when you do it is worth staying with the big easy by gambler. The ATTRAXX shadlin has worked well in the same areas, when you get a strike on this lure, set the hook fast, the bass will swallow this lure if you are slow to react. I cant wait for ATTRAXX to introduce their swim bait with the siax formula plastic. This will be the only swim bait you will need here on Okeechobee. My friends from Toronto Canada, Morgan and Marina had a good week fishing the swim bait this week in the pass. On the south end of Okeechobee the fishing was good on the East side of rita island in the bull rushes with the swim bait and pitching large worms in the heavy cover. Check us out Saturday morning on HOOKED UP WITH STEVE AND DEB on wokc 1570 am and 100.9 fm or www.wokc.com click on air. Okeechobee's true country for the latest on fishing Okeechobee and hear Kevin Vandam talk to Steve and Deb about his classic win and what it takes to make Florida bass strike your lure. Every fisherman needs to hear this interview.

2/23/20e11

Bass fishing all week has been great. My favorite thing all week is the top water bite with the prop baits. My favorite is a bang-o-lure I got when I visited the bagley warehouse a few months ago. The bait is one ive never seen before, it is twice the size of the largest bang-o-lure. It didnt have a prop on the bait so I took one off a old lure and it became one of my favorite lures. I can twitch the lure, or wake the lure with a steady retrieve. Right now you can catch bass on about any bait you fish so use the lures you really have confidence in. The ATTRAX plastic lures are getting very popular here on Okeechobee, the shadlin is my favorite. I use the owner hook with the screw holder in a 4/0, this is the perfect hook for the shallow grass but I thread it on a small jig head when Im fishing open water in the deeper holes in the canals. I can't wait for their swim bait to hit the shelves. The attraxx lures can be found at tackle ware house on line. The water is dropping so make sure you have enough depth before you try to plane out and i always feel the bottom with a short piece of cane pole to make sure the bottom is sand instead of rock. If the bottom feels hard, just keep moving out until you have plenty of water. Don't be in a hurry and you will save your prop and a lot of money. Until next week go out and enjoy the best fishing lake in the whole country, it's on fire.

2/16/2011

The warm afternoons have been the best fishing all week. A full moon this Friday is bringing a lot of bass to the nests. Warm days and a full moon, It doesn't get any better than that. I've has good success this week using a 7 inch sinco and a large swimbait. Horse Island behind the eel grass in the pads is good with the swimbait and the sinco on the shoal just west of uncle Jo's is the bait of choice around the reeds and there are some schooling bass along the shoal out in the eel grass. Look for some great fishing the rest of the week. I'm starting to see some shellcrakers on beds along the shoal, the water is clear enough to spot these areas. Put your trolling motor on a fast speed and cover a lot of water and when you get bit slow down and fish every inch of the water. Go fish and stay HOOKED UP.

2/9/11

It is back to normal this week after the slug fest last week in the FLW event here in Clewiston. You can catch bass almost anywhere along the outside edeges of the grass. The shoal area is good all the way to the monkey box. The monkey box has a lot of spawning areas that got targeted last week. We have had 3 major spawns already so there are a lot of post spawn bass that will start to school up where the best shinner and shad populations are gathering. My tip for the week is to watch for bait and look for any bird activity out in the lake. The lake is full of 5 to 7pound bass and I'm expecting the best spring fishing that we have ever seen here on Okeechobee. It was good to here the best pros in the world say that Okeechobee is by far the best fishing in the world. There are a lot of pros looking to move to the area just for the great fishing just like they did a few years back in del Rio lake amastad when the fishing was good on the border. We are getting ready for the wave of bass fishermen that are going to invade the area after the great exposure we got last week, it's about time. The lake is getting lower so my advise to any fisherman comming to Okeechobee bringing their bass boat is to hire a good guide for one day to learn how to get around the lake and not destroy their boat. It is easy if you know how. A guide will not only show you where to fish but how to run the shallow water. Check out HOOKED UP WITH STEVE AND DEB Sat for the latest reports on wokc.com 5 to 7 am.

1/18/11

Fishing ON Okeechobee IS SO GOOD , IT'S EVEN HARD TO DESCRIBE. BEDDING BASS, POST SPAWN BASS AND PRE SPAWN BASS, TAKE YOUR PICK, IT'S ALL GREAT. WE HAD THE HONOR TO HAVE ON HOOKED UP WITH STEVE AND DEB ALL THE BIG WINNERS FROM THE EVERSTART AND THEIR STORY'S ARE MUST HEAR FOR ANY FISHERMAN FISHING LAKE OKEECHOBEE TUNE IN wokc 100.9 fm 1570 am or on line at www.wokc.com Sat. 5 to 7 am and listen to their adventures. These are great stories, we will have them on for the next two weeks on HOOKED UP WITH STEVE AND DEB. UNTIL NEXT WEEK GO FISH AND STAY HOOKED UP.

1/11/11

The warm weather has made for some great fishing on lake Okeechobee this week. The live bait fishing is as good as i've seen. The folks from South Carolina this week have caught 8 bass over 7 lb in 2 day of fishing and are looking forward to tomorow. The lake is falling and most of the bass are on the outside of the grass but you need to work as far back in the grass as you can. The eel grass along the shoal area has been good with swim baits and top water early and late in the day. As long as the wind is down you can catch bass almost anywhere on lake okeechobee this week but when the next front comes crashing through the area everything will change, so get out there and fish. I think the tournaments comming up on the lake will help get the word out that Okeechobee is the best bass lake in the country. Check us out on HOOKED UP WITH STEVE & DEB next Sat. 5 to 7 am on www.wokc.com and get the interviews with the top finnishers in the everstart tournament last week here on Okeechobee. They all have great tips that will help everyone catch more fish. Untill next week go fish and stay hooked up.

12/22/2010

A good week on the Big O this week as we prepare for another cold front this week end. The best way to good limit is to get you favorite soft plastic, worms flukes or sinko baits and fish as far back in the grass as you can. The little pockets of open water close to the heaviest grass are the prime targets. A lot of these bass are spawning in those pockets. One tip is when you get your lure in those little holes is to let it set still as long as you can. You cant fish to slow but you can definatly fish to fast. I dont know if it is just a trend but lures with a lot of orange in them are becoming very popular with the best worm fishermen on the lake. Garrads tackle shop in Okeechobee has a new fluke type bait in a bluegill color that is being bought up by some of the best bass fishermen on the lake. This bait has a lot of orange in it. I will be buying some of these and reporting on my results. This week was a dream fishing week for the fisherman who likes to leave all that other stuff in the rod locker and get out that old worm rod and get a lot of tap taps on the end of his line. Im really getting tired of fishing in the cold but with the forecast for next week I guess I will have to get used to it. Until Next week go fish and stay HOOKED UP.

12/15/2010

One think I hate is fishing wearing lots of winter clothing. It make my back hurt and just simply tires me out. One thing iv'e learned over the years is how to dress in cold weather. Tight fitting clothing like the body armor that is supposed to keep you warm just doesn't work for me, it makes me colder. The best way to dress for me is to ware loose fitting T shirts and top that off with some light weight fleece. On top of that I wear a light wind shirt or my light weight rain gear. Fleece is warm but the wind goes right through it. If you are cold you just can't think and perform well. Enough on how to dress now lets get down to the business of fishing during these cold weather conditions. I you can fish late in the day, you will find the bass more active just before dark. In the tournaments held lately during cold days iv'e noticed that the anglers doing the best are the ones that keep the flipping stick in their hands the most. Now that the water temp is as cold as it will get any warming trend will get the bass active. Remember, when the water warms lust a little the bass will start to get active, it doesn't matter how cold the temperature is. Rick Clunn, the best angler in the world in my opinion said when you have to fish during a cold front, go to your best stuff and expect less. The depth of the lake is dropping and it will make fishing and catching much easier, just look for bass near the deeper water.

12/09/2010

Hello again, another good week of bass fishing even with the cold weather.Charlie Hartly, the Ohio elite angler made a apearence here on Okeechobee last week and he said he has never seen Okeechobee any better than it is right now and looking forward to the events coming up in Jan. and Feb. The water is still falling and anglers must be aware of the bottom make up at all times. If you are not sure about the bottom always trim up and slide in with the lower unit trimmed up. So much of the lake has a hard bottom and you just have to be very careful. One thing I always do is feel the bottom of the lake with a stick and if the bottom is soft or sandy I know the depth my Triton needs to get on plane and I can take off. If the bottom Is hard I just keep moving out till the water gets deep where my prop will not touch the bottom. Remember, if the bottom is hard and you are not sure about the depth you need to get up, take a few minutes and idle on out. Lake Okeechobee is at its best when the water is low and it is safe to fish if you are careful. One of the best ways to learn how to fish the shallow water is make one trip with a expert, one of the guides that has fished the lake for many years and the knowledge you will get will save you a lot of trouble and money. With the cold weather, the bass are the most active late in the afternoon. My tip for the week is slow down and use baits that act really injured like a jerk bait or a fluke. It is the nature of predators to clean up injured prey and bass are predators. Sat. morning we will be talking about fishing jerk baits and the tools you need to make them work their best in our cold water so tune into www.wokc.com 5 to 7 am sat. or 100.9 fm or 1570 am here around the lake.

12/2/10

Fishing on Okeechobee is still better than ever before, this week I shiner fished with Gene and Pat from S.C. and we caught 10 t0 15 bass between 5 and 8 lb. every day and many in the 3 to 4lb. every day. It doesn't get any better than that. When the sea gulls would let us we tail hooked the bait and got some truemendous surface strikes, and when the gulls wanted to chase our bait we would use sinker rigs to keep the bait down where the gulls couldn't get them. When I can I prefer to tail hook the bait so we can see the bass chase the bait on top and see the surface strikes. All this action happened in the east wall area of Okeechobee. Last Sunday I found a school of bass in the Taylor creek area of the lake that must have had hundreds of bass and we caught 74 bass from 3 to 5 in the afternoon on the hover trap. This is a bait that I think is the best lip less lure ever on Okeechobee. while retreving the lure you can stop and the lure will suspend where you can stroke the lure and promote some very hard strikes. Gold and silver are the best colors, I have a gold slow sinking hover trap that I have caught over 500 bass and it still has most of the gold finish still on the lure. Garrads tackle in Okeechobee is the only place around the lake that has this lure. The crappie fishing is still good at night with most of the specks being caught in the river and some good limits coming in goverment cut. The cold nights this week should really get the day time fishing going. My tip for the week is get a hover trap and go fishing, because the lure suspends you can fish it any where there is open water and work it in and around cover. Tune in at www.wokc.com next sat. 5 to 7 am. for the latest news on fishing lake Okeechobee on hooked up with Steve and Deb. Until next week go fish and stay hooked up.

11/11/10

Cool weather has made the afternoon fishing very good. Sinner fishing late, just before dark was the best I've seen in many years. The falling water levels is making the hunt for bass much easier with most of the bass on the edge of the grass. There are a lot of small bass in the very skinny water with most of the big bass still along the outside. Swim baits and spinner baits are my choice for looking for the hot areas. Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman made a appearance in clewiston Tuesday to support the Office Depot foundation and every one fished live bait and everyone caught a lot of bass and had a great time, and the fishing and the food was great. Lots of photos and autographs for everyone involved. Thanks to all the pros who came to support this great event. Crappie fishing is also getting better, minnows are the bait of choice. I think some crappie will start to spawn in the grass after this cool spell. Catch HOOKED UP WITH STEVE AND DEB Sat morning on wokc.com or 100.9 fem or 1570 am for the very latest on fishing lake Okeechobee and every thing going on around the lake. The bottom line is fishing is better on Okeechobee than ever and getting better every day. Until next week go fishing and stay HOOKED UP.

11/4/10

Another good week of bass fishing on the big O. This cool weather should get us thinking about checking our favorite spawning areas. One thing to remember is that there are always bass on or even outside of the grass edges. All bass don't spawn at the same time, some will not spawn until spring. We have the longest spawning season in the state. That is what makes fishing Okeechobee an adventure. You can catch bass on any number of lures and on many patterns. Usually when we start to see cold fronts we start to catch bass in the protected areas manly because that is where the wind doesn't mess the water up and that is where the bass like to spawn. There are a lot of shinner fish being caught along the outside of the grass and around the reed patches. If you are using lures, move fast along the edges f the grass and throw a spinner bait and when you get a bite drop your anchor or your dig in shallow water anchor and cast your favorite worm and fish very slow. One thing to remember is if you are catching a lot of small bass in the scattered grass, look around and find the heaviest reeds or bulrushes and fish them slowly. That is where the big bass will be holding. Go fishing and leave no stone unturned, remember every bass you catch is telling you something. Every good bass fisherman is listening and learning from every bass he catches. Crappie are being caught in the Kissimmee river in 15 to 18 feet of water in the middle of th river. This is good news for the fishermen who like to drift the river and cover a lot of the river. Until next week go fish and stay hooked up.

10/27/10

Another great week on the Big O,Big waves of big bass are moving into the edges of the grass and with the water levels going down, they will be out where the fishermen can get into areas loaded up with large bass. I personally like to cover a lot of water with the big spinner bait. The spinner bait is my search lure and it is the perfect lure for the scattered grass where the bass are living. On Okeechobee you need to fish a big lure because of the numbers of large bass that are living here now. When you catch a few on the spinner bait slow down and leave no stone unturned. Fish the heavy cover with your favorite flipping lure, mine is the gambler crawdaddy. My favorite spinner bait is a 1/2 oz. yellow and white with a large willow leaf blade, silver in the clear water and gold every where else. Check out my face book video on spinner baits, we will be doing many videos on a lot of topics that will let our friends know and actually see what is in my tackle box and how I trick out all of the tools or lures that I prefer. Check us out Sat. morning on wokc.com, HOOKED UP WITH STEVE AND DEB, and get some great tips from the best bass fishermen in the world. Until next week go fishing and stay hooked up.

10/21/10

Bass fishing was great this past week and I think we are going to experience the best fishing we have ever seen on Okeechobee. In local tournament events last weekend weights of 28lb. to win and a 5 lb. average in 5 bass limits to just place in the top 5. Yes Okeechobee is back and stronger than ever. Bass were caught all around the lake on Big swim baits like the big ez by gambler and pitching your favorite lures in the reeds and bulrushes. I interviewed Mike Surman at the weigh in and he said the big ez and the old reliable and still my favorite the craw daddy were a big part of his 25lb. bag. not good enough to win, thats pretty incredible. Mike said he still uses mono fishing line and the old brute true turn as a hook, There are reasons for the old style technique and we will go into details this Sat 5 to 7 am on HOOKED UP WITH STEVE AND DEB and we go into details as to why I prefer some of the old over the new trends and the key word is trends. This time of year there are a lot of ways to catch bass so always start out doing the things you like the best and it won't take long for you to start catching a few fish. The speck fishermen are already catching limits of crappie and I think this is only the beginning of some very good speck fishing. Minnows in the mouth of the river 10 t0 14 feet is the pattern in the river but the fishing has been good in all of the canals and the pier at the koa on the south side of the lake in the rim canal. Until next week get out there and stay hooked up.

10/13/10

Fall has finally arrived and the bass are moving toward the spawning areas. Most of the bass are staging in the heavy grass near the shallow clear sandy areas. My tip this week is to cover the outside grass with a spinner bait and slow down when you get one or two bites. Don't be afraid to venture on back in the shallow water to look for some spawners already in the shallow water. I stumbled upon a new product this week I think will benefit everyone fishing the shallow grass. It is the Dig In Anchor, this is a simple way to anchor your boat, silently when you drift upon one of those big spawning bass. We all know that the poles are the best way to anchor your boat in our shallow water and this system is the best I've seen and it costs very little compared to the power pole. I have a power pole on the back of my Triton but I still have to anchor the bow and this system is what I've been waiting for. Check it out on our sponsor page and let me know what you think. I'm so impressed with this anchor, I'm going to try to get all of our readers and listeners a real discount on this anchor. Check out HOOKED UP WITH STEVE N DEB Sat. 5 to 7 am on www. wokc.com

100.9 fm 1570 am to get the details on this exciting new product and how you can get a great promotional price on HOOKED UP WITH STEVE N DEB. I don't get to excited about many fishing products but the Dig In Anchor is going to be a real advantage to any fisherman from the crappie and bream fishermen to the most experienced tournament bass fisherman. Go Fish & Stay Hooked Up.

10/07/2010

The first cool snap of the year is bringing a lot of wind to the south end of the lake. The good thing is there is a lot of bass in the rim canal. The win is pushing some current in the canal and making the fishing very good. Crank baits and your favorite worms are the ticket in the canals. The North end of Okeechobee has been very good this week. Find the areas where the clear water is being pushed out by the wind and you will find the fishing excellent. Spinner baits are my favorite lures when the wind is blowing out of the grass. The water level will drop a few inches north and rise on the south end. Always take in consideration the wind direction and plan your day accordingly. Remember the wind is your friend. Fish with the wind and anchor your boat when you start getting bites. Go fishing and stay hooked up. Catch all the latest info Sat. 5 to 7 am wokc.com or 100.9 fm and 1570 am.

09/29/2010

Bass fishing is getting better every day. After the rains this week we will see the whole lake fire up and the fall fishing will begin. The bass are starting to school up in some of the same areas they were in back in April and May. This time of year I like to look for the wave of big bass moving toward the spawning areas. Last week we saw this in the east wall area where Live bait fishermen caught large numbers of really big bass staging in the heavy cover near the spawning areas. The long point area is another staging area for big waves of very big bass moving in from their summer home out in the middle of the lake waiting for their time to spawn. Here on Okeechobee the spawn is the longest season any where in the country. They start to spawn in Oct. and spawn through may and sometimes June, almost all year. My tip this week is to start looking just outside the places where you found the biggest areas of spawning fish last year. The lake is level is similar to that of last year, the rains will bring the lake up some this week...Some of our contributors on crappie are telling me that crappie are being caught off the pier in Pohokoee on minnows and some crappie are being caught on jogs in the Kissimmee river and the canals from Indian prairie to harnie pond. I think that once the crappie start to spawn that bird island will be a hot spot this year. The island had doubled in size and the reeds look as good as any time in history. Finding the key spots might be the hard part because the whole lake looks better than ever for crappie spawning. We are in for a great season. Tune in to HOOKED UP WITH STEVE AND DEB every Saturday morning 5 to 7 on wokc 100.9 fm. and am.1570 or wokc.com click on air and get the best tips from Steve and Deb and all our contributors keeping us informed on every thing happening on and around lake Okeechobee. Until next week go fishing and stay hooked up.

09/21/2010

Bass fishing has been excellent this week. Sonar gave us some great information on how to win by a larger margin, If you missed HOOKED UP WITH STEVE AND DEB last Sat. you missed some of the best advice that weave received in a long time. This pro knows his stuff and I predict after interviewing him last week predict he will make it to the big shows and be very competitive. Not only is he on top of his game especially in Florida but is skilled enough at a very early age to compete any where. His speaking ability and stage presents along with his ability to compete would be an asset to any company looking for a spokesman in the fishing world. Back to fishing on Okeechobee, there numbers of quality bass being caught in the J&S area and flippin in the heavy outside edges of the grass is hot right now. The lake is dropping a little each week and this is moving a lot of the bait back to the outside grass and open water. My favorite lures for the week are the gambler big ez to cover a lot of water and the old reliable 4 inch crawdaddy for fishing the heavy grass once i locate a good area with the swim bait. For the open water the gold floating hover trap is the only lure I'm fishing in the open water. That lure is the best if ever fished on Okeechobee for schooling bass. Until next weeK go fishing and stay HOOKED UP.

09/16/2010

Bass fishing is getting better with the cooler weather. The shoal was hot last week for the BFL held in Okeechobee at scott driver park. The tournament was won by "Sonar", Miles Burghoff from Orlando. He is one of the college team fishermen. This is a great story and he will visit with us on HOOKED UP WITH STEVE AND DEB on wokc 100.9 fm and 1570 am on Okeechobee s true country, tune in at 5 am Sat. on line at wokc.com click on air and hear how he caught a 5 lb. average and won by 10 lb over 98 of the best bass fishermen on the lakes. Sonar is the son of radar from mash one of the longest running tv shows of all time. This is a great story you can't miss. HOOKED UP WITH STEVE AND DEB is on air from 5 to 7 am every Sat. Spend the morning with us and get all the scoop.

09/09/2010

Fishing should be good in the BFL tournament this week. The lake is rising and this means one thing. Some of the schools in open water will move into the grass where they will be caught on swim baits in the grass and pitching your favorite craws and worms in the reeds and Kissimmee grass. After the rains I always look for moving water wherever I can find it. These could be pumps on the south end of the lake to inlets from the lake to the rim canal, The river entering the lake or just anywhere there is moving water. Always remember when the water on Okeechobee is rising there are bass moving back in the grass at any time of year. My pick for lures this week would be the Big easy gambler swim bait, the horny toad buzz frog and my favorite lure for the week is the gambler flappin shad, cut the tail and buzz this soft buzz bait any where the lake meets the grass and always be looking for activity back in the grass. Until next week go fishing and stay hooked up.

08/25/2010

Bass fishing has been good early and late on the outside grass and in the pepper grass. The pepper grass in the tin house area has been hot for numbers of small fish. I think the j&s area was the best area for schooling bass with some bigger fish being taken on hard swim baits. Some of the schools are 10 to 20 yards out from the grass moving into the grass as the sun gets higher. In the Clewiston area the biggest bass have been caught around the dynamite holes but not a lot of bites. Until next week, Go fishin & Stay Hooked Up.

08/19/2010 Bass fishing has been good early and late in the afternoon in side the grass lines on swim baits and pitching large worms and craws in the reeds and bulrushes. I also caught 2 bass over 7lb. in the dynamite holes on a new swim bait made by bagley

fished on the edges of the deeper water with a steady retrieve. I was driving my bass boat across the lake on one of those calm days and noticed that there are large schools of shat on the inner reef about a mile off the point of rita island. One thing I've learned over my 25 years on Okeechobee is when you see this activity there are large schools of bass some where in the same areas

Ill be checking on this and reporting on my success in my next report. I'm very excited to see the migration of the shad on the lake. Now I know why the bass have left on of my best spots in the middle of the lake. My tip of the week is when you get to fish on a calm day, spend the hot part of the day driving on the reefs and look for any bait or bird activity. You will learn a lot from the birds who also fish for their survival.

08/12/2010

Bass fishing has been good on Okeechobee this week, I think the rains have made the bass get a lot more aggressive. On the North end the pepper grass has been very good using flukes and flappin shads worked fast over the grass. Pitching the reeds has also been productive. On the south end pitching the bulrushes has been the best way to catch a big bag. When the bass get aggressive in the grass I like the flappin shad and the buzz frogs, I don't think color means much when you are buzzing the lures. When the schools move in the more open water I like the Hover trap in the floating model in gold color.

Fishing on the big O was a bit better this week. Bass are being caught on the outside grass lines on crank baits, my favorite right now is the gold hover trap in the floating model. Find a school with the hover trap and anchor your boat and cast a worm or your favorite soft plastic bait. Stay as far from the school as possible and you will catch many more bass. The summer time Bream fishing is good on the spoil islands and on the rocky reefs that cross the lake. The black and yellowbeatle spin is my choice for lures. Crickets for live bait.
